Food Stores

Groceries, Supermarkets & Convenience Stores

Independent groceries and supermarkets are continuing to lose units to chains. As recently as 1980, more than two-thirds of all food stores were independently owned. In 1997, independents and chains have roughly the same number of outlets, but the chain stores are typically significantly larger. The median supermarket is now 38,600 square feet and sells 30,000 items, according to the Food Marketing Institute.

Traditional Convenience Stores

Traditional convenience stores—those not located in gas stations—remain an exception to the rule that only large retail outlets can survive in the ‘90s. Although their numbers have diminished somewhat in recent years, they remain far more prevalent than they were in the ‘80s.
